Character Name: KAITO
Character Series: Vocaloid (PV:
Waiting in Earth)
Character Age: Appears to be in his early 20s, but is actually much older. I'd say around 150 years old.
Background:
KAITO is one of many Vocaloids. He is an android created to sing and dance and entertain other people, although his voice lacks the same depth that a human can have. This is particularly noticeable when he speaks - there is a slightly flat or disjointed tone to his speech. However, when he sings he has the potential to sound almost as human as anyone else.
KAITO is the second Vocaloid created, the first being MEIKO. Their function was to serve as an alternative to backup singers when none were available. It wasn't until the younger Vocaloid, Hatsune Miku, was created that they started to gain enough leverage to have a solo debut. She helped put the spotlight on her older siblings, giving them room to develop their own careers. When the Kagamine twins were developed and released, KAITO was able to garner more attention through duets with all of his younger siblings. Together, they formed the Crypton family and were able to garner quite a bit of popularity.
As time went by, more and more Vocaloids were created by other companies. They eventually became close friends, co-workers, and/or rivals of the entertainment world. There were even alternative versions of the main Vocaloids that appeared. Although KAITO was an older model, he still had a good amount of fans to stay afloat. People continued to support them and they continued to sing.
Unfortunately, humans became more wasteful and selfish as technology continued to develop. Pollutants continued to destroy the ozone. The deserts were growing due to deforestation. Chunks of mountains were blasted away as roads were built. Trash and other toxic waste were dumped in the ocean once the humans ran out of land to bury them. Tension between nations rose as people needed more resources.
Despite their physical appearance, KAITO and the other Vocaloids were too young to understand the signs of desperation. They only knew how to sing and entertain. When everything finally exploded, they were caught by surprise.
The world fell into a war of attrition. Everyone held back in order to gain the most from their enemy. No one wanted to admit defeat. Little by little, the people died.
Soon, it was only the Vocaloids who were left with an Earth that was barely alive. Decades passed. Plants and animal life began to flourish in places they normally wouldn't. Things that people thought were extinct began to return. The air became clearer. Buildings collapsed. The once barren and nutrient-drained soil began to grow green plants again. Animals returned.
The Vocaloids began to wonder if humans would return as well. No matter how long it had been since they last saw them, it was always going to be the humans who mattered the most to them. After seeing small amounts of animals replenish their numbers within decades, they began to hope that the same would happen with humans. With that small piece of hope in mind, they began to search.
A century passed. The Earth was reviving everything else except humans, but they continued to hold onto their hope. As they journeyed, they fell victim to rust, age, and acid rain. They helped each other for as much as they could until no one was able to function correctly. They broke down, unable to move but fully aware of the process of decomposing they were about to undergo.
KAITO was alone again. He continued to search with the knowledge that, one day, he will also fall victim to nature and rust away.
He lasted thirty more years before he finally collapsed, the metal in his legs unable to support him anymore. It was another twenty before he finally malfunctioned and lost awareness.
Resources:
source onesource twosource three Personality: At root, KAITO has a happy and fairly childish personality. Even though he is considered the 'older brother' of the group, he can still be clumsy or more foolish than his younger siblings. This has never stopped him from trying to play the part as best as he could, though. As silly as he is, he usually has good intentions behind his actions.
This base personality is still within him, although time and circumstances has dulled it. He experienced the pain of watching his human friends and masters die without being able to help them. KAITO mourned their deaths,
singing in their honor, knowing he wouldn't be able to see them again. As time went on and the Vocaloids still found themselves lost, they began to question their own existence. Even KAITO fell victim to this, and
the fact that he could not die began to haunt him. Again, it was time that healed this wound and allowed him to accept their situation.
He continued to try to be the good, older brother figure to his younger siblings. He helped them move on from their own sorrows, he sang songs with them, and he tried to do the best he could to comfort them. Of course, he still occasionally failed at doing so, but that was a sort of familiar comfort all in itself. KAITO matured a little, learning from his experiences and taking responsibility for his 'family'.
Unfortunately, he had to suffer through another trauma as everyone around him began to rust and break down. Ironically, the newer Vocaloids malfunctioned quicker than the older models because they had more sensitive materials. The loss of his fellow Vocaloids was another shock to his system. He became a little quieter, reserved, and sad now that he finally understood what was going to eventually happen to him.
Through his despair, the small, childish part of him still held onto the hope of encountering a human before he broke down. He continued to have that hope until he finally malfunctioned and went offline.
Abilities: As an android, he doesn't actually have a need to breathe or eat or anything. (That has never stopped him from eating ice-cream, his favorite food. He has never needed to eat due to necessity or hunger, though.) His appearance never changes since he cannot age. However, he wasn't built to be a super-strong battle machine or anything. His strength is probably only a little more than the average adult human male, with his endurance even greater.
