whee!
this weekend is Chicago and the Jeopardy! audition! :)
gonna play a little quiz game and listen to some blues and eat some deep dish pizza and ride the El and gawk at some lovely art & architecture and take part in whatever other adventures come my way. thanks muchly to those who offered advice and tips.
haven't really had time to prepare for the audition, though they say it's not really something you can study for anyway. you're either "that" kind of person, with a head full of useless knowledge, or you're not. i think i am. :)
i know i'm going to be weak on Birthplaces of Vice Presidents' Dogs and all the other trivial American categories. i've tried my best, but there's no way i can compete with a lifetime of indoctrination. :P
ah well. at least i've got a better grasp of geography than this guy:
US congressman claims "South Toronto" is a hotbed of Islamic extremism as someone who lives about as far south in Toronto as you possibly can without falling into the dubious depths of Lake Ontario, all i can say is: huh???
i can't really fault him for being concerned about border security and the possibility that these kinds of radical elements can pop up just about anywhere. but dammit, if you're going to single anybody out, it's generally a good idea to:
a) make sure that something called "South Toronto" actually exists, and
b) do your homework so you're not left making vague and obviously under-informed statements like "it's a location which I understand is the type of enclave that allows for this radical type of discussion to go on".
of course, he's got one thing right - it *is* an enclave.
it's an enclave of joggers with friendly dogs and young families on tandem bikes and ice cream trucks and workaholic yuppies who love being able to power-walk home from Bay Street and kids' marching bands practicing in the park and people bringing home cases of 25 (not 24!) from the micro-brewery around the corner so they can go up to their rooftop patio and barbecue some gourmet burgers.
yeah, al-Qaeda-R-Us, right there. :P
or maybe he's talking about the people on the Island? hmmmm.... they're so cheerfully defiant and slightly smug - yeah, they must be up to something. *grin*
