All I can really add right now, is that if we get rid of AA, there will be nothing to replace it, and things will be disgustingly unequal. A kid coming out of Groves or Clarkston has nowhere near the same chance as a kid from the city going to Northern or HP high. Also, southeast michigan is the most segregated area (detroit is 2nd most dangerous city) in the nation, what we pretty much have is seperate and unequal.
Also, America, has a pretty damn strong tradition of Affirmative Action for whites; housing programs after WWII, running I-75 through black neighborhoods, etc. (there was a really good article about this in metrotimes a week ago).
I think that since our country refuses to desegregate (just watch MTV) we need to force it (remember the titans style). Think about Ruby Bridges. She had to be escorted into the school by federal marshalls (talk about AA), and then she was in classes of one. This was only 46 years ago.
I totally agree that Affirmative Action is not a great thing to have, but neither is THE MOST SEGREGATED AREA IN THE NATION. And it sucks so fucking bad because I agree with everything you've said, I just believe that things are worse than you think, and that until we come up with a better idea, which I believe there are plenty of out there, changing the constitution would be short-sighted.
