Wake up on New Years Day to something unexpected
The first thing that Rory noticed as she started to come to was that the inside of her eyelids were red, which meant there was sunlight streaming in from the window. The second thing she noticed was that she seemed to have three hands. This wasn’t exactly a worry to her just yet, what was of greater concern was that the third hand didn’t want to respond to the impulses in her brain that wanted to check to see if all the fingers worked.
She’d grown a useless third hand over night. This was not good.
Then the third hand did move, and so did the arm attached to it, sliding low to where Rory’s hip was under the bed covers. And a nose and mouth were pressed against her neck, nuzzling against her. Her blue eyes snapped open and for a moment she considered screaming out for her mom or just shoving the intruder out of her bed and running.
But then the mystery nuzzler grunted and Rory relaxed. It was Jess. Not just Jess, but her Jess. She didn’t really remember how he’d got here, but that didn’t better. She wrestled her hand out from under the covers to take his in hers and tried to sneak a peek at him without waking him up.
Jess lay on top of the bed, still in his coat, but his boots had obviously been discarded. The question as to why there was so much sunlight in her room was answered by the fact her curtains were open. Guess there were still some of Jess’ hooligan tendencies left since he’d snuck into her room.
Rory still wasn’t worried. He could sneak into her room all he wanted. This was nice. Actually, it was better than nice. She could get used to waking up next to him very easily. The Jess lump shifted again and she turned her head to find his brown eyes gazing sleepily at her. She watched as he took a breath to say something, but before any words escaped his beautiful mouth, something else could be heard.
“You up yet, kiddo? Come on, it’s after ten on New Year’s Day and I’m thinking it’s time we tackled the movie collection. Now, I know we’ve done it before, but now we have DVDs and all those Christmas gifts. Apparently when someone’s not buying me coffee, they buy me a DVD. Anyway, you up?”
Rory’s blue eyes went wide, and even Jess looked a little panicked. Before he could think of anything though, Rory was already pushing him out of her bed and down onto the floor with an unceremonious thud. She smoothed down the covers as best she could and pushed her bangs back from her face as she felt her stomach clench and her palms turn sweaty.
Rory had never been good at lying, especially to her mother. Lorelai pushed the door to Rory’s room open and stuck her head in, looking far too chirpy after a late New Year’s Eve. “So you are awake. You really need to start using those lungs, Candy. A mom might think she’s yelling at herself otherwise, and we both know how that ends.”
Rory nodded, trying so hard not to look down at where Jess was. “With you quoting endlessly from Terms of Endearment.”
“That’s right. Now, let’s go! Chop, chop. Time’s a-wasting. I’ll give you ten minutes for a shower and getting dressed.” Lorelai turned around to leave, and Rory was about ready to relax before her mother shouted one last thing. “And if Jess decides to try and join you for that shower, I’m cutting the time limit to thirty seconds.”
Rory slapped her hand over her face and sunk lower into the bed. Jess finally sat up from his spot on the floor, and rubbed at the back of his head. “So really, you kicking me out so brutally was apparently unnecessary.”
Rory gave a little nod as she peeked out from between her fingers.
“S’okay, I like it when you’re rough.” He stood up carefully and leaned down to kiss the top of Rory’s head. “Happy New Year, by the way.”
Rory reached out to take his hand, and pulled him back down onto the bed. “Hey, where do you think you’re going, mister?”
Jess jerked his head towards the window. “Back to Luke’s?”
Rory sat up and leaned in to kiss him. “Stay.”
“If it was just you…”
“Stay. Please?”
She watched Jess frown before he seemed to relent as he smirked and kissed her. “You owe me.”
Rory grinned, and hugged him before she had to scramble out of bed to start on her shower. “Next time you can get under the covers.”
