23. I've always been a coward // And I don't know what's good for me
(Kate Bush - ‘Hounds of Love’)

Returning home had been just as hectic as leaving. In fact, Rory’s return to Stars Hollow had lasted two days. Then there had been the visit to Hartford to see her grandparents that had felt like a third day and it had only been dinner. She was tempted to take up her Mom’s offer of a room at the Dragonfly just so that she could get some peace.

It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate the town’s pride in their resident online political journalist-far from it-it was that there were only so many times she could talk about what it was like on the campaign trail. Miss Patty had seemed particularly disappointed that Rory hadn’t embarked on a series of heated affairs while traveling the country.

How could Rory explain to her that it was because she couldn’t stop thinking about one guy in Philadelphia? The one she didn’t have the courage to seek out, too scared to find out he was still disappointed in her. The fact that he’d more or less sought her out gave her hope, even if it was online.

She could only imagine how Stars Hollow would react to finding out that after all these years Rory’s heart still beat a hundred times faster at the mere idea of being anywhere near Jess Mariano. Maybe her turn down of Logan’s proposal wasn’t entirely to do with not being ready to get married after all.

Her lunch marathon at Luke’s was scheduled for Saturday so that Rory and her Mom could go back to the Gilmore’s for a Friday Night Dinner. Richard and Emily apparently not yet done interrogating their granddaughter. It made Rory wonder if she would get another awkward hug from Richard.

It was now Thursday night and at an hour when she was sure everyone was asleep, Rory made her way into the town center and just stood there, breathing in the cool night air. Stars Hollow always looked different at night, but it was still home. This was where she’d grown up, and it was still where she was happiest. Colleges came and went, even student housing came and went. This town was always going to be there for her.

Movement caught the corner of her eye and her mouth fell open at the sight of Kirk naked with while carrying a Christmas tree. Thankfully the tree was hiding the part of him that she never, ever wanted to see. Kirk just frowned and gave a shake of head.

“Don’t ask.”

“Okay.”

“No really, don’t ask.”

Rory raised her hand to her mouth to hide her smirk. “I’m not going to, I promise.”

She watched him struggle with the tree, and if he hadn’t have been naked maybe she would have offered to help.

“Lulu wants another tree.”

“I didn’t ask.”

Kirk sighed. “I know, but I felt that maybe there was some explanation that needed to be offered.”

Rory gave a nod. “Okay.”

Kirk stopped to offer her an awkward wave. “Welcome back, Rory.”

“Thanks, Kirk.”

Nope, there really was no place like Stars Hollow.
