02. Oh I am always thinking about you // and how you always wear me well // you can't outgrow something sewn under your skin // so I will always wear you well.

She saw him once on a street in Philadelphia. She hadn’t known what to do while he walked down the opposite side of the street as she stood in front of the coffee shop, hot beverage in hand. She considered crossing to talk to him but her feet didn’t want to move. Not until it looked as if he was about to glance in her direction and she quickly hid herself behind a car. She even crouched down, and waited before she peered out from behind it to take another look at him.
When her heart had started again it beat a lot faster than it should have. He looked the same. He looked like-
Well, he looked like the Jess she’d love. Did love. Would always love. He disappeared around the corner and Rory let out a slow breath. She thought about their conversation a year ago in his bookstore, and the kiss they’d shared. Maybe she hadn’t been able to cheat on Logan like he had on her, but that didn’t mean she hadn’t thought about it. Really thought about it.
Why else would she have gone to Truncheon in the first place? It wasn’t because she wanted to cheat with just any guy. It was Jess Mariano. Jess who would always be a part of her life. Jess who would always own a piece of her heart. Jess who she still found herself thinking about at least once a day. Jess who’s book she read so frequently the pages were starting to become dog-eared.
Rory reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out her cell. She scrolled through her list of contacts, her thumb poised over the call button as she found the one she was looking for. She could have chased after him, spoken to him face to face. She just didn’t know if she was ready for that yet. She wasn’t even sure if she was ready to talk to him on the phone, but her thumb had other ideas.
She hastily held the phone up to her ear, her heart somewhere up near her throat as she waited.
“About time you learned how to use a phone.”
Rory closed her eyes and let her head fall forward; every single moment they had spent together came rushing back in a torrent of emotion. “I’m a slow learner, but I get there in the end.”
