John? If you can hear me, you'd best get your sorry ass to the kitchen real quick. We could use your help.

---NOW WITH ADDED KITCHEN MADNESS SPAM---

[At least the fire stopped them from tripping over themselves, which was good considering this kitchen had more tools and whatnots in it than Abigail had ever seen before in her entire life ( Read more... )

shouty for no reason, probably the worst cook ever

[There's a lot of noise coming from the main dining hall. That would be Una breaking up chairs for firewood. She's got enough for at least a day so far, and is sincerely hoping that things will get to rights before they have to do in all of the remaining furniture. The kitchen fire's been built in the largest stockpot available, basically creating a sort of firepit over which spits can be arranged as needed.]

[Iroh has been in and out of the kitchen since the power went out in the early hours, leaving only to check on Facilier and make sure that nobody had been hurt or abandoned on the less-travelled levels. He reenters now, a small controlled flame flickering lamp-like over one palm, and crosses the room to meet Una. Somewhat concerned, he puts his free hand lightly to her shoulder.]

There's more than enough firewood there, for now. Rest. This would be the worst time for you to over-exert yourself.

[Una, who has paused for a breather in her work, turns to Iroh with a weak smile.]

I suppose it'll do for the time being. And it'd be a nasty trick if the lights came on in an hour and the furniture was wrecked.

[Iroh returns the smile, sitting down cross-legged next to her with surprising ease for a big dude.] I think if the lights were to come on in an hour, people would be more than happy to eat standing up.

[Una chuckles a little.]

True. I know I would.

[She sighed and rubbed her forehead.] I really hope this doesn't last for too long, and I really hope we don't find out the hard way about what else is not working here besides the lights.

[Iroh's smile fades. It hasn't failed to occur to him that 'what else' might not be working also encompasses the Death Toll, and he doubts anyone will be exercising restraint because of the possibility that their victims will not return.]

I think that is a hope we all share.

All the more reason to stay on top of things.

[Bloody hell, it's no good being grim at the moment.]

Still. Could be worse. At least not everyone here is completely dependent on twentieth-century Earth technology. [She nods in the direction of where the salting and brining is going on.]

[Iroh nodded blithely. Several aspects of twentieth-century Earth technology still felt foreign to him.]

The ships I sailed in were always dark below decks. Oil lamps and our own gifts were all we had for light, and the food...was not unlike what we will have now, unless we had recently put into port. In those superficial ways I admit I feel quite at home.

[Una smiles a little.]

That reminds me of Albion. Tallow candles and oil lamps and great roaring fires in the winter. I should spend more time there; it would be good for my moral well-being if nothing else. I get too accustomed to the modern era sometimes.

I think I would be quite alarmed by the modern era as most people here know it. [He huffs out a soft laugh.] To tell the truth, in some ways I was quite relieved to have missed the port in Salem.
