If fandom had gotten hold of Kazuo Ishiguro's
Never Let Me Go, it would have raised the stakes. There won't be any of this going gently into the night, there would be hope of salvation. While I liked the novel on its own terms -- the quiet prose, the unobtrusive development of Kathy's and Tommy's doomed love -- I was saddened by the novel's bleak inevitability. If my fanmind was to recast the book with Spencer as Kathy, the carer; Brendon as Tommy, and Ryan as Ruth, then there would be rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And now I want fic.
