Sometimes the simple methods really do work =)
Think of a piggy bank. Chances are it'll remind you of a small child saving up, putting in their 20c every week to save up for extra lollies at the milk bar, a new gameboy game, a special toy they wanted. Or, I dunno. Pokemon cards. For me, it was Barbie clothes.
For some reason as we get older we forget about the humble piggy bank and replace it with... er, a real bank. But why is it that we immediatly consider this to be the best way of saving? I don't know about you, but the convenience of this magic little plastic card which accesses my 'multitude of riches' makes me SUCH a careless spender. Whip out the card and you can pay! Many times! Yay! What do you mean, I only have 83c in my account? There must be a mistake! Yep. Not being able to see the money I'm saving somehow makes me waste it all the more. =(
But on top of this I have maintained the humble piggy bank. I don't think about it, he just sits in my bedroom being pig-like and cute. (Tangentially: How cute is Spiderpig from The Simpsons Movie? =P ) If I have loose change (Poo-change, as its often delightfully referred to) in the bottom of my handbag, in my pocket, etc, I just thoughtlessly put it into my pig and move on. Until today. I had 65c to put in and as I pushed it through the slot... IT STUCK.
That's right: My piggy bank was so full, I COULDN'T FIT ANY MORE MONEY IN IT.
Bemusedly, I opened the little hatch at the bottom (Yeah, I know... a real piggy bank, you need to smash to open. Deal with it, I like my pig. I don't want to lose him in a smashing incident), and I shook it. Only one coin fell out.
My piggy bank was so full, ALL THE COINS HAD LODGED TOGETHER IN IT.
So after like, 15mins of jiggling and displacing money, I'd emptied out little pig. There was like, two fist-sized piles of coins. I reckon it weighed a good kilo. I had no idea what to do with it, so I decided to start counting it out. I started with 20c pieces. I HAD ALMOST $10 IN TWENTY CENT PIECES. I got bored, so I decided not to count any more... but seriously, there was just as many, if not more, of most other denominations of coin. There must be a total of like, $50 in there (which for a recently unemployed girl is a lot)! Honestly didn't know what to do with it all!
So I've taken out all the 5c and 10c pieces to take to a bank or something, and put all the rest back... to keep saving =) When I find out how much they are I'll let you know :P But until then: keep this in mind: DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE HUMBLE PIGGY BANK.
I AM RICH IN POO-CHANGE!!!
And tangentially and awesomely again: I GOT A JOB!!!!!!!!! I'm currently on trial; a trainee at Adairs Eastland. I GET TO SELL PILLOWS!!! =P So I will let you know how that goes. But on the same note: I'm now coming into much moneys. YAAAAAAY.
