Dear Friends,
As Physicians for Human Rights-Israel confirmed earlier this week, Khader Adnan ended his 66 day-long hunger strike on Tuesday, February 21st, after reaching an agreement with the State Attorney's Office. According to the arrangement, Khader Adnan will be released from administrative detention on April 17, 2012. Barring the introduction of new evidence against him, his detention will not be renewed.
We would like to all of you for your invaluable support, action, and engagement on behalf of Khader Adnan. We so much appreciate the many ways you assisted us in our efforts to protect Khader's rights during the time of his hunger strike and joined in his struggle against the unjust practice of administrative detention.
Khader Adnan is expected to go through a complex recovery process. PHR-Israel's affiliated doctor will continue to accompany Khader through his treatment in the weeks and months ahead.
The type of struggle Khader chose to wage against the torture and degrading treatment to which he was subjected during his arrest and interrogation and later, while protesting his arbitrary detention, not only succeeded in exposing the injustice done to him personally, but also resulted in generating
heightened awareness of the issue of
administrative detention and opposition to it in
Israel and
around the world.
Over the past weeks, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel was confronted by significant challenges and ethical dilemmas. In the coming period, we hope to share with you a summary and assessment of the various issues that arose from our involvement in this case. Once again, thank you for your support.
