Last night, I watched two Singaporean short films called
Falling into Fuchsia and
Substitute written and directed by A.D. Chan. They are NSFW. I thought they were both executed well, though I might be slightly biased as the director is a friend. :D
Here's what I thought of Substitute (which you can see under the site's comments):
Hmm. Substitute. I like the direction, especially that shot where Joan knocks on Hong's door and lets herself in (does anyone respect others' privacy anymore??) and reads his journal. I find the character Hong sweet and shy in the beginning, disturbing as the film goes on and downright creepy by the end. The twist wasn't what I expected at all. And the lines "to be or be with" and "guard your place. you could be replaced." takes on a whole different level of connotation. When his seemingly genuine feelings turn into voyeurism, I was stunned (because I think if you truly feel for someone you'd respect *their* feelings) and then the twist, he dresses up like Joan, wears her clothes and behaves like her, everything crystallizes and his psychosis becomes apparent.
I don't quite know which I like better. Falling into Fuchsia, for the stark realization that everything you know to be true can change or Substitute, for its darker themes dealing with obsession. Generally, I gravitate to dark things but I kinda like the interaction between Gary and Aidan.
Check them out if you like good short films!
