When I told my mum about three and a half years ago that I was thinking about going to uni in England, she said 'Three years are a long time.' I replied that maybe it was going to be even longer, that maybe I would find myself staying in England afterwards.
Of course I didn't really believe that then. In fact, I wasn't even quite convinced I would make it through three years
Three years are over, I'm graduating next Friday.
Well, technically I'm not, because I'm fighting with uni over tuition fees, which I am not willing to pay. For one, the course was very disappointing, mainly because out of the three terms that form the academic year we were being charged tuition fees for, only two terms were actually being taught. What they did teach had nothing to do with the hard skills I would need to survive in the German industry - Photoshop, 3-D modelling programs, tools and the use of them, design skills ... etc. The course was one great lesson in 'ah, you don't really need skills, just blag it confidently enough and you'll be fine!' Which I've got the hang of now in this country, trying that as an outsider come to the German industry is a little too feisty for me.
So since the University of Kent can't give me back the time they made me waste, I want a third of my money back, and stressed the point by not paying for the last year. The only thing they can threat me with is withholding the paper, which is worthless in Germany, which is the place I wanted to get it for, and unnecessary in the UK, where I will most likely hop from job to job through contacts and recommendation.
No going home just yet.
Home is where the heart is, and our wings are our only nest. Etc.
There is a document on my desktop that reads 'Heike Pyrotechnician Contract'.
Which in itself is quite sensational. It was sent to me by one of the major street arts and fireworks companies in this country, if not in Europe, and the best thing is that they got in touch with me, telling me that they would really like me to apply for one of the jobs they had going. (I had sent them my CV months ago, after a coursemate who worked with them recommended me to them for a project that then didn't happen.)
They're based in Manchester, and I'm getting excited.
I have decided to specialise in uprooting. And grab life by the balls.
