Misery Loves Company

This is post that I've written and rewritten on two movies that the only thing in common is Little Red Riding Hood.

Interpreting The Company of Wolves will make you feel  like a you're some film expert (not really just a smartass). The movie itself is filled with symbols and metaphors for female sexual awakening. The story came from The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. Basically, it's feminist reworkings on well-known fairy tales and folk tales like:
  • Bluebeard: I like the ending in Carter's version.
  • Snow White
  • Puss 'n Boots
  • Erl-king
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • Beauty and the Beast

I watched a Michelle Phan video with the makeup tutorial for red riding hood. My hackles rose when she said that Brothers Grimm's version was a very "dark" story There was a huntsman to rescue the girl and that's a happy ending. Apparently, she didn't read the Charles Perrault's where the wolf won. Call me a snob, but this girl doesn't know her fairy tales. The other Grimm stories are dark and creepy. Lately, she's been doing some short films. Let's just say that Phan should stick to doing tutorials. They're not bad, but I find them corny. Perhaps, it's just not my brand of tea.

Out of the American comic books, I'm more incline to read the Batman titles. Lately, I've been disenchanted by Bruce Wayne in his treatment toward the robins and any close allies. The blame can be placed on writers or editorial dictate (I'm staring hard at you Dan Didio). I kind of want him to act like a father-figure to his wards especially Jason Todd and recently Damian Wayne, fan's reaction to him went from bad to tolerable. Watching Under the Red Hood made me more sympathetic towards Todd like finding a poor neglected stray puppy in the back alley of the rundown theater. Being the emotionally constipated punk, I could say my eyes grew misty. I like the animated version as supposed to the paper counterpart.
