Papillon

May not appeal to everyone. Branded to Kill is not your run-of-the-mill yakuza movie. It could be deemed too artsy, nonsensical, and disturbing. Nevertheless, it is humourous and beautiful to watch. This work of art is in my list of favorite films. What was memorable was the scene in Misako's home. The walls was literally a large butterfly collection.

My impression is that she is avid butterfly collector with a strange way of displaying it. Later on, I learned she is a suicidal butterfly collector. The other characters in movie are a strange batch. She has a twisted relationship with Hanada. He is just as crazy as Misako because the guy gets arouse by the smell of boiling rice. There is Hitman no. one who is so paranoid that he sleeps with his eyes open (is that physically impossible?).

Seijun Suzuki, the man behind it, was blacklisted for this which is very unfair. I find him inspirational because he didn't want to follow studio dictate in Branded to Kill's production. His brand of absurdity influence in this journal full of nonsense.

(This still is not mine. The Criterion Collection DVD ''Branded to Kill'' takes credit.)
