The Frog Prince

I have been thinking about The Frog Prince. One is never too old for fairy tales, believe me! It started with a dream. I dreamed that this fat, bald guy risked his neck to save Brownie from being hit by a car, and Identitee was so impressed with his nobility and valor, she joyfully promised him my hand in marriage. Um, thanks, friend. It was an amusing dream, to say the least, and bore several resemblances to The Frog Prince, so becoming curious I reread the story, got intrigued, read some stuff about it online, etc.

Interestingly, in the original tale (or one of them) it is not a kiss that transforms the frog into a prince. Far from it, it is when the princess gets mad at him and throws him against a wall that the transformation occurs. Woohoo, so according to fairy tales princely qualities are revealed through compromise and authentic communication (if of a rather violent and dramatic sort.. .hey, it's a fairy tale!). What a profound little story. This sentimental scene captured my imagination, and inspired me to compose the following poetic meditation. Excuse any sloppy scansion, please.

The Frog Prince

A frog's adaptablity
Emotional agility,
And overall gentility,
I celebrate in song-o!

Once anger flashed from lovely eyes:
"You're fit for naught but catching flies!"
How this and other wrathful cries,
Fell stinging on his ear-o.

And words were not all that she threw--
Soon through the air our frog friend flew!
I'm told the next thing that he knew,
His head had struck the wall-o.

How strange that this should grant the chance,
Needed to break the witch's trance,
And fill his life with sweet romance,
Could he persuade his dear-o!

He blinked a cold reptilian eye,
Sad kindness there she soon did spy.
She wonderingly heard him sigh,
Next-- poof!-- he was a prince-o!

Amphibious dexterity
Compounded with celerity
Ensured this frog's celebrity,
And won the happy end-o!
