Developing An Opinion

I'm not an environmentalist. I'm not into recycling. I don't drive a hybrid.

That being said, the history of offshore drilling spills (Deepwater Horizon, Ixtoc I, etc), where oil is spewed out into the environment in staggering quantities over months, pretty much tells me that the industry appears to be unable to develop working contingency plans for handling potential problems and containment of the oil should it spill.

I think the industry should not be permitted to perform offshore drilling until it develops working contingency plans.

The most recent spill, the Deepwater Horizon, alarms me not so much in that it happened but in that no one seems to know how to stop it. Having meetings with people from all walks of life to discuss ways to contain an oil spill is a great idea. Doing so after the fact, when untold gallons are spewing into the Gulf, is just stupid.
