An aging Windows 2003 Server began having stability issues this week so today I was going to back everything up and reinstall from scratch. The backup went pretty well, I have all the data. The bad news is, I haven't been able to reinstall.
I'd be lying if I said I knew what was wrong with the server hardware. All I know is the Windows 2003 server installer blue screens at the exact same place, with the exact same error every single time. The specific stop error usually indicates faulty RAM or some other general hardware failure. It's very likely the latter. I ran CPU and memory tests all day today and everything came up clean. For awhile I had some hope that it was actually a defective DVD-ROM drive so I tried another one but, no, that wasn't it.
Just for the hell of it, I tried to install Windows XP on it too. It also crashes, different place and a different error but it crashes. So... something's wrong with it and we don't have the money right now to get a new box. Fortunately, the (even older) Windows 2000 server has picked up as much of the slack as it can.
(If any of you have a working 2GHzish 1GB RAM machine that you don't need anymore, let me know.)
