As was I. I was very young, too young to understand suicide or anything related to it. To this day I hate Roger Davis, totally irrationally, for replacing him.
The speedy replacement never set right with me, although it wasn't really Roger Davis's fault. I blame ABC in their greedy to cash in before anyone knew what was happening.
It wasn't his fault at all - a guy's gotta work - but I was a kid. I resented him profoundly.
Of course, it doesn't help that he had recently played a heartless thieving gunman on the very same show!
To this day I don't get that "just replace him!" attitude they had back then about shows when an actor left. Like they're interchangeable? Like people won't notice? Just write the guy/gal out, for god's sake.
That's what that series creators wanted to do, but the networks (so much more powerful back then) wouldn't let them, saying they were under contract. Didn't do the series any favors and the fans didn't like it at all. That's why it ended in '73. Now, they don't have that sort of power anymore.
