After all of the Nam brother’s luggage was in their respective rooms, Dongwoo had suggested giving them a tour of the estate. Woohyun shrugged nonchalantly, eyeing Sungyeol, whose attitude for this vacation seemed to do a complete one-eighty, curiously when his younger brother agreed instantly.  Dongwoo’s face lit up with a bright smile and Woohyun couldn’t help but smile back at him, something about Dongwoo just made you feel happy.

“Hmm, a few rules of the house though. If you make a mess, clean it up. Don’t run down the stairs since they’re pretty old and we don’t want you two hurting yourselves. And something pretty important...” Dongwoo pointed to a door down the hallway. The door was a cherry wood with a large engraved circle with strange looking signs inside of it. Woohyun titled his head to the side, narrowing his eyes at the circle on the door. It seemed a little familiar to him but he didn’t dwell on it since it was probably just reminding him of some Celtic necklace one of his friend’s had showed him once.

“That door is usually locked but… If for some reason it’s open, don’t go up there. The floorboards are really bad up there and your grandfather doesn’t want you two falling through the ceiling.” Dongwoo laughed, it seemed his happiness didn’t have an off button and Woohyun couldn’t help but feel extremely attached to him even though they had only met moments ago.  Sungyeol peered at the engraving, tilting his head to the side and narrowing his eyes trying to get a better look.

“What does the engraving mean?” The youngest boy asks. Dongwoo shrugs with his ever present smile, saying he really had no clue. He had asked their grandfather about it one day when he first started working at Tavendore and he only got a grunted ‘came with the house’ in response. Dongwoo continued with a few obvious rules that Woohyun tuned out of, fixing his gaze on the engraved door. The detail was amazing and if Woohyun cared enough (and had access to the internet) he would have looked up the sign to see what it meant. Something peculiar did peek his interest when in his observation; the door didn’t have a door knob or even a place where the handle would have broken off. ‘How strange,’ Woohyun thought.

“This is also important,” Dongwoo emphasized, Woohyun snapped his attention back to the older boy looking a bit sheepish at being caught not listening. Dongwoo didn’t seem too upset, giving him a smile that crinkled his eyes.

“Did you guys see the tall hedges by the garden in the back?” The brother’s nodded at the question. Woohyun noticed how Sungyeol instantly perked up at the mention of the shrubbery structure.

“It’s actually a maze that leads to a certain part of the forest. Mr. Nam and I haven’t maintained it since we already have so much to do. It’s probably a disaster in there, so don’t go in. Okay?” Woohyun almost laughed when his little brother immediately deflated at the comment, it looked like Sungyeol really wanted to check it out. Woohyun almost felt bad for Sungyeol but not quite. Dongwoo looked sheepish when he saw the sad look on the youngest boy’s face.  He patted his shoulder awkwardly, unsure as to what to do exactly. Suddenly, the tallest boy smiled and looked at Dongwoo is the biggest pair of puppy-dog eyes he could muster. Dongwoo blinked, looking around and shifting nervously.

“Maybe Woohyun and I could help you restore it?” Sungyeol suggested, Woohyun made a protesting sound but the younger boy shoved a hand on his. The shorter boy glared at Sungyeol but he was ignored.

“Um…” Dongwoo paused, eyes flicking back and forth between Sungyeol and the floor. Woohyun noticed the older boy rubbing his hand on the side of his jeans, nails digging into the course fabric. It seemed like a nervous habit and Woohyun made a note to file that information away in case he needed it later.

“I don’t think that would be a good idea… Your grandfather wouldn’t want you getting hurt.” Sungyeol looked like a kicked puppy, eyes shining and mouth trembling. Woohyun could admit that Sungyeol knew how to pout; very few people were immune to it (basically only Woohyun. Sungyeol claims he has no heart because of it). The older brother felt a bit sorry for Dongwoo because it seemed like the kicked puppy look was really getting to him since the oldest boy said he would try to talk to their grandfather into taking a guided tour of it. That seemed to satisfy Sungyeol, who smiled, and Dongwoo visibly relaxed. Woohyun shoved his younger brother away from him and suggested for Dongwoo to show them around the estate.

--

After taking them on a tour of the house and the grounds they could explore (which excluded the attic, maze and surrounding forest), Dongwoo had left them to do his daily chores.  The Nam brothers sat in the upstairs parlor area. Woohyun was browsing the reading selection, staring to become very thankful that he brought a suitcase of his own books with him, on the bookcase that covered the entire wall adjacent to the sit-in window that Sungyeol was perched on. The younger boy stared at Woohyun’s back, sulking. Woohyun could feel the other’s stare but, like most of what Sungyeol did or said, he ignored it.

“Stop ignoring me. I need to talk to you.” The black-haired boy said with a huff. Woohyun rolled his eyes and continued looking at the shelved books.

“Then talk.” As much as Woohyun wished to ignore Sungyeol, the fact of the matter is that he’s stuck with this annoying and nosy younger brother for the next three months and it would be best (for his own sanity) if he kept Sungyeol at least somewhat placated.

“I know you don’t have the emotions to care about our situation but I do. I can’t believe mom and dad just… Left us here while they have a grand time in Europe. Eating crepes and taking boat rides down the canals of Venice!” Sungyeol paused to sigh, looking out of the window with melancholy. Woohyun merely raised an eyebrow at him.  Sungyeol was spending way too much time his friend Kibum, it was turning him into a drama queen.

“It’s not that bad… The only thing that really sucks is that we don’t have a TV.” Woohyun instantaneously regretted saying anything about the television when Sungyeol let out a high pitched screech as he flailed about.  Woohyun sighed, thinking ‘it’s going to be a long, long summer.’

--

Dongwoo stretched, looking at the sunset that filtered out behind the trees. The job was hard at times and really tiring but it paid well and Mr. Nam was a nice and understanding employer. And sometimes, Dongwoo got to see some pretty amazing things. This summer seemed like it was going to be fun since the Nam brothers were at the estate for the summer. Woohyun seemed laid back and cool while Sungyeol was exactly the opposite. When Dongwoo got some free time he would be able to hang out with them. Mr. Nam was great but he was usually in the forest and he can’t really connect with some of the topics Dongwoo wanted to talk about. So, having two kids his age around was making Dongwoo extremely excited about working at Tavendore.

Dongwoo packed up his supplies, slinging his backpack on and headed to the maintenance shed. Dongwoo had the urge to just chuck his bag on the ground and leave it for tomorrow but he knew how Mr. Nam was about organization so he had to place his tools back in their proper storage places. Dongwoo quickly put the utensils away, kicking the pack over to the corner of the shed. The blonde really wanted to get to the house to start cooking dinner, there was a small prospect that one of the brother’s would want to help him.

“Dongwoo.” A crackled voice sounded in the shed. Dongwoo sighed, taking his walkie-talkie off of his belt; he hoped that Mr. Nam didn’t have anything else for him to do. Dongwoo replied to his employer, pressing the button on the device and speaking into it. They had to carry walkie-talkies since the cellphone reception was horrible at the estate.

“I won’t be at dinner so set something aside. And when I get back, we need to talk.” Mr. Nam replied. Dongwoo’s brows furrowed, this was very unlike the older man. His employer was all about schedule and doing things in routine. And the talk also piqued Dongwoo’s curiosity.

“Is something the matter, sir?” Dongwoo asked. There was silence for a while and Dongwoo was about to repeat his question or maybe apologize for even asking when Mr. Nam replied.

“The worst has happened, my boy.” And with that Dongwoo could tell the conversation was over for now. An ominous feeling rose up in his chest and Dongwoo felt like he couldn’t breathe for a minute. It seemed what he and Mr. Nam feared would happen; did. Though, maybe Dongwoo wasn’t thinking of the correct situation. He hoped he wasn’t.

--

At the manor, Woohyun had the land-line phone pressed to his ear, looking completely bored with the conversation. He examined his nails as he listened to what was being said on the other line. He wouldn’t have called if he knew he was going to have to listen to a ten minute story about how cute animals in the countryside were. He heard someone walk up behind him. Woohyun twisted around, the spiraled cord of the landline phone curling around his waist.

“Who are you talking to? You’re boyfriendddd~?” Sungyeol snickered like an elementary schooler behind his hand. Woohyun couldn’t believe that he was actually surprised by his younger brother’s behavior anymore.

“Where the hell have you been? Chanhee and I stopped seeing each other months ago. It’s mom, stupid.” He heard his mother admonish him for insulting Sungyeol but he ignored her.

“They are at the airport and are about to leave so give them your last words.” Woohyun unraveled the cord from around his waist and offered the phone to his younger brother. Sungyeol whispered that he had made it sound so foreboding before pressing the phone to his ear.

“And I don’t have boyfriends, just fuck buddies.” Woohyun whispered, once the phone was a safe distance away. Sungyeol sputtered, sounding like he was choking. Woohyun could hear his mother asking him if he was okay. Sungyeol glared at him and he could only laugh at the look before he walked away, leaving the younger boy to talk to their parents.

--

Woohyun was reading in the kitchen when Dongwoo came inside. The blonde blinked at the pot that simmered on the stove. Woohyun looked up from his book and gave Dongwoo a smile that lit up his eyes. The older boy came to the conclusion that Woohyun’s smile was really beautiful and kind of rare.

“I started dinner. Don’t know if it’s what was planned but I found the ingredients for roasted chicken and tomato soup. I made some homemade bread as well; it’s cooling on the rack by the refrigerator.” Dongwoo stared at the younger boy, dumbfounded. Woohyun had done far more than Dongwoo had even dreamed of. If he hadn’t thought the taller boy wouldn’t have been freaked out, Dongwoo would have fell to his knees and cried out of joy.

“Wow… Thank you so much, Woohyun! I… Wow…” The younger boy chuckled, shaking his head as he set down his book.

“It’s cool; I don’t really have anything else to do around here. Besides, I like cooking and I’ve been told I’m pretty good at it.” Dongwoo nodded, taking a seat in front of the other. He had a lot of time to himself now. Dongwoo was extremely grateful to the other boy.

“I’ll probably taste as amazing as it looks.” Dongwoo says, eyeing the perfectly browned bread that looked like it was sprinkled with herbs and cheese. He couldn’t wait for the whole meal to be done so he could dig in; this was far more than anything he could ever make.

“Are you going to go into the culinary arts? If you’re good at it and you like it, it’s perfect for you!” Dongwoo didn’t expect the look on Woohyun’s face to be so sad after he mentioned that. The older boy tried to meet the other’s eyes but Woohyun looked out the window instead.

“No… It’s just a waste of time. You can’t make a career out of something like that.” The blonde boy wanted to reassure Woohyun that it most defiantly wasn’t a waste, even if the younger one didn’t have a talent something you love was never a waste of time to pursue. Before Dongwoo could say something Sungyeol came running into the kitchen screaming about how he was going to die if he didn’t eat soon.

“Oh my god, FOOD! It smells delicious!” The youngest boy shouted, bouncing. Dongwoo was a little jealous of Sungyeol’s energy; maybe he could make use of it and give him a few things to do around the house.

“It’s your brother’s doing. I’m amazed about what a spread he prepared.” Dongwoo glanced at Woohyun who went back to reading; it didn’t seem he had heard Dongwoo at all. Sungyeol took a seat next to his brother. He was smiling, so it seemed the youngest boy was in a far better mood than he was when he had first arrived.

“Woo is great at cooking! It will be yummy, for sure.” Sungyeol said, taking in a deep breath to smell the aroma of the cooking food again. Dongwoo expressed how thankful he was once again; Woohyun merely nodded not taking his eyes away from his book. Dongwoo announced that he needed to go wash up before dinner was finished. He got up from the table and started his journey upstairs.

“Hey, Dongwoo.” Woohyun said, making the older boy stop and turn around. Woohyun hadn’t moved from his spot, eyes still on his book. Sungyeol stared at his brother, leaning his head on one of his hands.

“You don’t have to worry about cooking anymore. I can take care of the meals while we’re here.” The smile that appeared on Dongwoo’s face almost reached his ears.
