I guess my view on spirituality is too unusual. I happen to think we can be spiritual *and* that science will answer everything eventually. Science means knowledge, and that (to me) includes spiritual knowledge. Also, the comment "everything is matter and energy" doesn't mean there's not a spiritual component in there, like maybe spiritual energy, or that matter and energy aren't thinking entities in and of themselves. Other than my spirituality quirk, both materialist and modernist fit, probably the former moreso than the latter.
