Buona sera!
We just checked into our hotel in Florence after spending a little more than 24 hours in Venice. It's amazing how different the towns are...Florence is similar to Rome, with tall buildings, small, crowded streets, and brightly lit. Venice, on the other hand, had a completely different pace. We just wandered along the Grand Canal for two days, recovering from the fast-paced Roma that we're used to. It was nice to breathe and eat gelato by the canal. Gondolas were 80 euro, so we skipped out on that, but we took a water bus to and from the train station, so we kind of got the feel for the waters.
Venice looks just like it does in paintings...you literally feel out of place, like you're walking through a work of art. The pictures look fake because they're so beautiful. Flowers are hanging on every window and it's fascinating to see doors that open straight into the water. It rained a lot there, though, which was kind of a bummer, but we managed to walk around despite the precipitation.
We haven't had a chance to experience Florence yet, since we just arrived and we took a taxi here. The man who owns the hotel speaks ZERO English, but Katie is awesome at asking questions and communicating with people who don't speak our langauge, and we found the museum that we're visiting tomorrow (the one that holds the famous statue of David). The rest of the time we're going to meander through the streets, probably eat a ton of gelato, and shop. We head back to Rome tomorrow night around 6.
I love that we're staying in Italy for a month. We feel like Rome is our home, but we're still able to navigate our way through these other cities. We arrived in Venice and Florence with only our hotel address...no map, no idea of what we were doing, and it was fun. Scary, but fun.
Well, it's time for bed, but I'll try to update more often.
Buona sera!!!
