[Layton's handwriting looks like this.]That was one of the "experiments" I've heard about, I take it? I must confess, I cannot fathom the purpose of such a thing. I simply hope that things like that don't happen very often ( Read more... )

An archaeologist? Really?

Hm. Haven't seen them, but I'll keep an eye out for them.

As for worlds, I doubt we're from the same one, if "London" is any indication. I've never heard of it at least and universities are rare enough in my world that I think I would have.

Oh right. I'm Smoker, by the way. Welcome to Luceti.

London is rather famous, so I agree that we're very likely not from the same world if you've never heard of it.

Thank you, though.

If I may ask about your world, then, why don't you have very many universities? Most major cities have at least one in mine.

Most people are too busy with other things I suppose. There's the marine academies and most people go there instead. More practical applications I suppose.

Marine academies? So they're run by the military?

Still, it's a pity. I believe the pursuit of knowledge is worthwhile, even if it doesn't have immediate or obvious practical applications.

Right. For officers.

As do I, but I suppose it depends more on what it will be used for sometimes.

So the military is a major presence in your world?

Science and invention can always come from the most unlikely of places.

Correct. I'm a marine myself.

Indeed. Most of the time it's left up to each island or the countries themselves to decide what to do as far as most progresses in technology go. Although, the marines do have their own division.

Is your world just not peaceful enough to benefit from universities right now? There wouldn't be a strong military presence for no reason, I imagine.

I wouldn't say we couldn't benefit from it, it'd just be difficult. Most countries are raided by pirates who flee too quickly for individual governments to really stop them. So the marines are meant to deal with them instead. On top of everything else.

You think they'd steal from universities too? Or is it because they're raided, they don't have the money to build them?

Both.

Different islands do manage to develop different specialties. Drum Kingdom used to be famous for the best doctors in the world. Then between an idiot king and pirate raid by Blackbeard, and I don't know if they have even more than a few doctor left.

Places with a lot of history like Alabasta constantly face pirate attacks looking for gold -- or even worse.

A pity, truly. Perhaps that will change, though.

Perhaps.

Seems more like the start's only just begun.

Oh. How long have the raids been going on, then?

The Great Age of Pirates really began after the Age of Sea when Gold Roger died and encouraged an entire world of pirates to take up looking for his treasure. That was a little over 22 years ago. Since the the number of pirates has exploded. And right now the balance is a little... disrupted.
