Soaring

Something was up there above him but Lee really wasn't quite sure what, well at least not for the first moment or two. It was the quiet that finally answered his question, or rather their cries that shattered it.
He certainly couldn't see them very well at first. The sun was more than a match for the glasses he wore. As they streaked over his head though he was able to spin himself around and move closer to the cliff, which finally blocked the direct sunbeams.
He dropped his head back into the water again as they dove toward him, the two of them in a dance old as time. The dance that would hopefully end in the continuation of their species. A species that had grown so frighteningly close to extinction that what he was watching above him might truly be classed as a miracle.
The dive was followed by her soaring into the sky, with him in hot pursuit. Eagles were said to be the shield of Zeus. He rather preferred they be the sign of the reawakened life they had discovered on this new Earth. The thought brought a smile to Lee's face, and another memory of one of his favorite places to keep in solitude.
