I do feel a little awkward about the "because you're my son" line. I don't think that's something that would actually help Lee at all, because Bill's not putting confidence in Lee's abilities for any reason other than because he's related to Bill? It's not "I know you can do this because I know you're an amazing pilot" or "because I trust you" or anything like that. It's another way of telling Lee that his worth is because he's related to Bill, which I think would just make Lee feel ... I don't know, overlooked again? Kara's trusted because Kara is awesome, but Lee is only trusted because he's Bill's son
( ... )
I see what you are saying, but I really do think that Lee took a lot from that statement, even if it is not directly related to his abilities. I think Lee didn't have the belief that his skills weren't up to snuff, but instead that he was lamenting that no one had confidence in him, maybe not even his father. I see Bill's words as saying, I am proud that you are my son and I have faith in you. I think that if Bill had said something about his mission skills that it would have seemed too impersonal. Bill said something to him that made it intensely personal and meaningful. Lee never felt that Bill was proud of him. In that moment, I feel like it all changed (albeit short-lived).
I agree with Bill seeing Lee as an extension of himself, but I also see that for Lee, in this moment of personal crisis, that Bill is supporting him. Bill has likely NEVER said anything like this to Lee before and I think his heart must have been singing. <3<3<3
Aw, no, I'm happy that that's the way you see him taking it, because that's wonderful, and I really do want them to have those connective moments sometimes. And you know Lee far better than I do! Anything that bonds them more closely together is good in my book ♥
I think your read on Bill is completely accurate and he doesn't get any parenting awards. I guess I am taking it into context thus far in their relationship. It's a bit of too little too late, but in this case, for this mission, it works well. Lee does what he needs to do and I even imagine him following his father off the hangar deck and have a few hours of sleep. His father's approval, one of the things he has sought forever, must have been very sweet.
Later, of course, Bill is careless and selfish and downright mean. Grrr. I can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on Bill then, too. You read him so well. (and more grrr! LOL)
Heh, that's partly because he's just like my stepdad in a lot of ways, right down to the communication issues with his son. I love him very much, but he drives me nuts at times. Aw, Bill, you big squishy dumbass ♥
I love the idea that this helped Lee to go get some sleep, which meant that, in a purely practical way as well, it helped on the mission.
There's something very poignant about it being his grandfather's lighter, too, because I think it's obvious that Lee felt close to his grandfather in some ways. It's that family connection, from generation to generation.
it does to me. That's my take on that part also. "Because you are my son" is not a good reason not to have doubts about that kind of a mission. And I like what you say about Kara vs Lee here.
On the other side, YES it's a big step. It;s probably the closest to a real father that we ever get to see Adama. Admitting that his own father was better at the parenting thing, listening to him, trying to make him feel more confident all of those count. I just wanted a little more. I can see that kind of a statement working if he would have said: Because I trained you or something.
But in the end it was a good moment of bonding and Adama managed to do what he had to. As I see it it;s not really important what we want/see/think about the scene it's important that in the end it worked for Lee and the mission.
