*hugs* Just saw this a couple of hours ago via lanning's lj, but then LJ went down (as it's been doing on and off all day), and I couldn't repost.
Called Suzan, and the first thing we asked each other was, "Is P and J's marriage affected?" I thought you guys were still US citizens at the time you married.
Fucking conservative assholes. Hell, even The Shrub didn't dare go this far.
Once the lawsuits and the floods of mail bury this bastard's government, he'll regret this reckless act. I'm just sorry for the innocent Canadians (and non-Canadians), LGBT and straight, that this hurts. Because it's just a pointless, stupid drain of finances on the country, and bad feeling all around. Total stupidity. That's the "Conservatives" for you.
Let the lawsuits commence!
And, from the article I read: Critics of this attack on LGBT people have noted both online and off that if gay marriages are now without legal standing in Canada if the couple’s homeland forbids them, are Middle Eastern women living in Canada now stripped of their rights to vote, drive a car, or even show their hair? Is being gay now punishable by death in Canada if you’re from Uganda? Is blogging or criticizing your government now illegal for Egyptians living in Canada?
We can hardly believe we are reporting this. Expect massive coverage in the coming days.
How would you feel to wake up divorced by a foreign government after years of marriage?
I said to several people, "You know how the national anthem of Canada is 'O Canada'? Well, today, it's more like *facepalm* *shaking head* 'Ohhhh, Canada.'"
Even with the idiots you guys currently have in power, I never expected anything this boneheaded out of the Canadian government.
Yeah... It'll be interesting. But, hey, we had two ceremonies already - a Wiccan handfasting at Mediawest, then the ceremony in Niagara Falls a couple of years later -- if we have to marry a third time, then what the hell. I'd marry her a dozen times if necessary!

And I imagine Canadians didn't, either.
