My friend Myke Hutchings posted about a favourite album of his from 1995. I’d never heard it, as it turns out, and I wondered how that had happened, because ’95 was a big year for me, musically. I was 24 in ’95, I was (temporarily) out of Etcetera for the moment, living alone and with no friends to speak of, working like a dog and trying to teach myself to write music. Like I said, big year.
So I consulted Wikipedia, and figured out how it happened:
Collective Soul - eponymous (1995 album) (This was good for me)
Matthew Sweet - 100% Fun (does what it says on the cover)
Frank Zappa - Civilization Phaze III (Oh yes, this was a big album for me. Right up there with Yellow Shark for me)
King Crimson - Thrak (THIS!!!)
The Rembrandts - LP (lost classic. Perfect tune smithing by the numbers)
Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight (SO important to me)
Blind Melon - Soup (THIS!)
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (Best. EP. Evar.)
Urge Overkill - Exit the Dragon (not their best, but Last Night/Tomorrow was wortht he price of the album)
Green Day - Insomniac (Brain Stew was big that year)
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom (their finest)
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (Beautiful album)
TR-i (Todd Rundgren) - The Individualist (not his best album, but it was interesting; still prefer No World Order)
Queen - Made in Heaven (a bit uneven, but with some great stuff; a fine finale)
So yeah, I was apparently pretty busy, and that was all just new music. I was diving deep into The Beatles and Genesis that year, trying to write my own Instant Karma (John Lennon solo, I know) and Evidence of Autumn. Nearly got there, too.
