From The West Side To the East Side, Through The Window I’m Looking Out

Today, I am busy preparing stationery for Stinson Creative Lab. We (Natasha, Dawn and myself) are in the process of registering to become a (possibly charitable) Not-For-Profit organization. So I figure it’s about time I explained what SCL is, while it’s still fresh in my mind.
The Stinson Creative Lab (SCL) is a facilitation team whose objective is to organize and/or sponsor artistic events and projects in Hamilton, Ontario. We are located in Stinson neighbourhood, and have strong ties here to the community association (SCA) and the neighbourhood action plan (SNAP), but we work independently of them. From small beginnings as publishers, event coordinators, project leads, and team organizers, we are finally officially setting up shop (metaphorically speaking) as a fully-registered service provider/operation that liaises between artists and collectives like ourselves, and the greater arts and charitable organizations that are willing to support worthy Creative-led projects and events with an eye to community building.
What we actually do is talk to artists in and around Stinson (and, logically, further abroad as we get going), and try to help them determine how to do the projects or events they have in mind. Then we help them find the resources and/or capital to implement their plans. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
I wish.
Anyway, that’s what we’re doing. We’ve got some money given to us for events, so it’s time to start a business account and get a bank account, at least. Which means we need to talk to a lawyer about the particulars of filing for Not-For-Profit status.
So if you’re a community-friendly lawyer looking for a project not unlike this one to champion, this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for. Three perpetually broke artists trying to make a difference in Hamilton. What could possibly go wrong?
