I really want to know where it states In canon that Hufflepuffs are mothering and family oriented. And nice.

Zacharias Smith was a Hufflepuff. He was also an asshole. The only Hufflepuff we ever saw who was a mother was Tonks and we didn't really get much first hand knowledge of her in that mother role. The most prominently featured family oriented ( Read more... )

I totally get that... I will often end up voting those types of people as Hufflepuff anyway - but for entirely different reasons!

I'm supposed to be on Hiatus but I had to check LJ this morning and want to comment on this.

Some of the things I saw in the HIH cheatsheet for canon traits for each house, I definitely don't agree with. They like to say Slytherins are subtle, but if memory serves, that is not said in canon ANYWHERE. I'm certainly not nor was Bella or Draco and they were Slytherin.

I think HIH just has their own guide really and that's all there is to it. I believe I've even heard someone say Hufflepuffs were associated with eating/food but that's not in canon either.

I think the food association comes from their Puff CR being right next to the kitchens, though it's not like we see them stuffing their faces in the books. They just have the easiest access lol!

That could be why, but yeah...like you said, it's not like they're scarfing down food constantly - any more than anyone else, really. I think it's really just an assumption.

I agree with this - I think HiH's canon is different from the "real" canon, by a long shot. Real canon does not necessarily support Gryffindor as being full of CAPSLOCK and sparkles and loud and impulsive - you don't have to look any farther than Neville to debunk that myth - but HiH Gryffindor is.

Yeah, this is a really interesting concept for me as well. I'm pretty sure the only canon evidence we see of a close Hufflepuff family is Amos and Cedric. It's pretty clear they're tight-knit and loving, but I don't think there's anything...unusually close about their relationship, I guess. Like, they have a good bond and they love each other, and obviously Amos is wild with grief when Cedric dies, but there's nothing about it that makes them seem any closer than Cissy/Draco or Molly/her brood.

LOL >.> Maybe a little. But seriously. You DO have some Puffish traits, but I don't count love for family as a HUFFLEPUFF trait and yet so many people are citing that as their reason for placing you there.

My secondary house is definitely Hufflepuff, but I don't think I really identify with the canon house traits. I want a pat on the back when I do something nice. I'm not patient. I don't give a shit about fairness as long as I get treated good. Which I think means the opposite of trust. And I fucking HATE hard work. Give me the path of least resistance.

These are all things I know about you. I don't think you're a Hufflepuff, even if you are extremely loyal in the sense that you don't give up on friends, even when they treat you like shit - you know, unless they seduce your husband, so even your loyalty has limits.

The reason I think being family-oriented is considered a Hufflepuff trait is because Hufflepuffs are loyal but more importantly because being family-centric involves a lot of self-sacrifice and putting yourself last and a lot of fucking hard work, and those are canon Hufflepuff traits. Not to mention that working for your family is something for which you will never get recognition or a raise or a promotion. It's selfless and service-oriented. Plus holy crapballs do you need patience to have a close family.
