Things have looked up since I posted that really sad football post. How things change so easily, no? This week has been good to me football-wise so I'm hoping it continues through the weekend. I'm still clearly on a football high right now so let me express my joy here.
First off, last Sunday's United-Liverpool match, which is one of the biggest matches of the season for both teams. I personally look forward to it every season because nothing beats watching your team play not just for points, but for pride as well. United-Liverpool matches usually end up being really dramatic and epic, and this match was no exception. We were up 2-0 and then Liverpool (courtesy of Gerrard) was able to equalize in the second half from a free-kick and a penalty. I thought we were headed for a draw (and I was feeling pretty frustrated about it) until Berba scored another goal in the 84th minute to seal the win. At that point, Old Trafford went wild and Berba made history, scoring the first United hattrick against Liverpool one in 60 years. My favorite goal from the match was the second one, and it will probably be in contention for United goal of the season:
Can I just say that I am just so proud of Berba right now, he has worked so hard to be where he is right now. Leaving the national team to focus on his training with United just shows the extent of his commitment and his drive to prove himself. He did so well in the off-season and now he has 6 goals under his name so far this season. And what makes it more amazing is that he is so humble about it. Bless that Bulgarian man :')
And building up from the Liverpool match, United won 5-2 against Scunthorpe United to go through the 4th round of the Carling Cup. So a lot of people may say that it's just the Carling Cup or whatnot, but a trophy is a trophy at the end of the season and I'd love it we were able to defend our title. Priority is still with winning the EPL though :) Besides, Carling Cup is also about giving the other boys a bit of a run.
Goal scorers of the night include Darron, Smalling, Park and Owen (who scored twice). I was hoping Chicharito would find the net but he was playing from a different position. Despite the scoreline, Scunthorpe made Tomasz work a lot, which is good training for him as well. He made some good saves for us. Their fans are pretty lively, and our away crowd was amazing. One of the highlights of the match was the streaker who ran across the pitch when Bebe came on. LOL forever. And yes, Bebe made his first appearance in the first squad. I hope he gets more chances to play, I'm excited to see what he can do on the pitch given more time.
Other things to smile about:
- Real is number one in the La Liga standings.
- Cristiano scored a goal in their last match.
- Hearing United fans chanting "Viva Ronaldo" even if he doesn't play for us anymore (So so so lovely )
- CSKA Moscow winning 1-0 against Sebir.
- Borussia Dortmund winning 5-0 against Kaiserslautern & Mats scoring a goal. Sucks I didn't see it though.
- Schalke winning 2-1 after a late goal by Huntelaar.
- Liking rival Bundesliga clubs and not caring about the situation, lol. For now, anyway.
- Watching the North London Derby. Spurs lost but still, the other matches made up for it.
- And I forgive them because they won 3-1 against the Wolves last Sunday, and both VDV & Roma scored. So yeah.
- Lastly, I just want to share this video because it is too damn cute not to be posted.
