Tragedy has struck the flycatcher nest on my front porch...
I just checked the nest of the birds I'd spoken about. Imagine my horror as I only saw a small portion of it remaining on the platform.
The rest of the nest, including a tiny broken egg, was lying on the concrete below.
The wind did not knock this nest down.
How much do you want to bet it was a friggin' outdoor cat? And yes, I can complain about the outdoor cats because they're illegal here. I just hope the mother bird got away so that she and her mate can try again somewhere else.
I am seriously bummed about this. I checked on them before I went to bed last night...all was fine. :(
I forgot to mention, this...the platform was about 7-8 feet off the ground BUT there's a large water barrel and trellis that both go up pretty high. It's quite plausible that a cat jumped up there as it would have only been a distance of a few feet.
This really makes me mad. I was so looking forward to these birds.
I can't tell you how awful it is to see their broken nest and egg lying on the ground. :(
