Fanfiction: Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban: Even if You Never Understand Why. Part 4

Jun 17, 2008 23:32

Title: Even if You Never Understand Why.

Rating: PG/FROC for a few bad words, and an eventual, completely *non*sexual bath scene.

Genre: Seinen-ai/SoftSlash.

Pairing/Characters: Narumitsu (P/E), the rest of the main cast.

Length: Long. As in, insanely so. Posted-in-chunks long. *sweatdrop*

Squicks: Miles is sick, but he'll get better.

Spoilers: Post GS4. Set a few months after "Forward into the Past."

Author's Notes: Written for the kink meme, and grown beyond all possible reasoning. For anyone's reference, it's filling this here: http://teagueful.livejournal.com/31002.html?thread=8391962#t8391962. The title was taken from the end of this post.

Disclaimer: If they were mine, I wouldn't be where I am now, I'd be writing GS5, Turnabout Commitment Ceremonies, and raking in cash hand over fist.

"Thank you very much!" Phoenix called over the speaker, taking the medicine from the drive-through box. He waited until they were back on the road before tucking his earpiece in and hitting the voice button on the cell. "Call office."

"Nick, what's the verdict?" Maya's voice was rushed, curious.

"Maya, the phone doesn't have caller ID. How did you know it was me?"

"Who's the supernatural one here, me or you? Now, what did the doctor say?"

"It's mono. I'm going to need you to take Trucy for a week. I don't want her to get this now if we can help it. I'll still come down to the office from time to time, so I can see you all then, but most of the week's going to be spent upstairs."

"No chance of it being left in the air for her to pick up?"

Nick shook his head as he waited at a stoplight, checking on the sleeping man beside him. "No, it's spread through spit and snot, and I'll be able to air out the place once I get him to stop shivering. The furniture can be gone over with a Rug Doctor or something. But, also, someone's going to have to look after Pess."

"My place allows small dogs; I'll just bring him home for a little bit, and let the landlord know I'm babysitting."

"Perfect. Is Trucy there? Can I talk to her?"

There was a shuffling, a muted informing of the switch, and then the girl's voice came over the line. "Daddy, what's going on?"

"Hey, sweetie. I'm gonna have to ask you to have a giant sleepover with Maya and Pearls this week. He's not good at all, and I don't want you to get sick, too. This stuff is nasty."

"What's he got?"

"Mononucleosis." He pronounced it slowly, knowing she was likely to look it up online or ask about it. "Just search for 'mono,' and it should come up on Google. He can't have much in the way of medicine, since it's a virus. I'll still come see you in the office now and then when he's sleeping, and I can grab a shower."

"You promise?"

Her earnest insistence drew a laugh; he understood her aversion to being left behind. He tried to give her the warmth and caring she needed, and only realised how much he succeeded during times like this. "Double-dipper promise with caramel sauce and confetti sprinkles," he swore.

"In a waffle cone," she reminded insistently.

"In a waffle cone," he repeated. "At the Creambean. Only the best, if I screw up."

He heard her sigh of relief. "Okay. But, I'm gonna hold you to it no matter what."

"I love you too, sweetheart. I want you to go upstairs and pack for the week, and promise me you won't strew your magic stuff all over Maya's apartment, okay?"

"I promise. Love you, Daddy."

"Love ya. Can I talk to Aunt Maya again, please?"

Another shuffling, and the channeler's voice came over once more. "She's so adorable when she's worried. I don't know how she manages it, but she's just like you."

"It's the artist in us both. That cuts across genes. I'm about a half-hour from home, and I asked her to go up and pack. He's got hand-wipes in the glove box, so I'll wipe off the keys and drop them off on the way upstairs so you can go get Pess, and my coat. I think that's still in the bathroom there. Um, I'll probably take the service elevator, since it has that platform on the one side, and he can sit down. I can say hi to you both before we go up. I'll need a couple more things from the store I couldn't get with the sickie, but they can wait until tomorrow. We're definitely going to need Klavier. Remember, give him whatever he wants. Hell, if he wants Justice tied up with a purple bow, go to the fabric store and get ribbon."

"When did you get it together so well?" Maya laughed. "You're all about leadership now. You've come a long way from scrambling about and blushing every twenty seconds."

"It's all in having people I have to care for, Maya. You're the same way, you know. Having Pearls, and now the run of Kurain... We're just a couple people trying to make the best of what we've got." He looked down at a beep and frowned. "Hey, my battery's about to go. Talk to you in a bit, yeah?"

"Talk to you soon, Nick."

"Bye." He pulled the earpiece out and spared another glance at the man beside him. "We'll get you straightened out, Miles... even if you never understand why." He braked for the next red light and sighed, waiting to finish his way home.
