I walked to the library yesterday morning after work because I had another five DVDs on reserve that were ready for me to pick up (Underworld: Evolution, Big Fish, The Color Purple, Goodfellas, and Peter Pan). I kind of randomly decided to go on a longer walk and check out the last remnants of fall foliage on my second favourite bike trail which I have been neglecting far too much this autumn.
On the trail, I was tracking deer again when I got out there deep enough. As always I stopped to examine the mud/clay/sand/whatever at the riverside beneath the bridge, and I spotted more fresh deer tracks. I think they must come down there daily for a drink of water. When I continued down the bike trail, I eventually came upon two deer, who literally leaped into the trees to avoid an encounter with me. I tiptoed down the trail a little bit in hopes of catching them off-guard and getting a picture, but they must have crept deep into the trees where I couldn't follow, because I never found anything.
Not until much later on, that is. For some reason, I decided to take an alternate route home, instead of walking back on the bike trail. I wound up along Frontage Road, and that's when I spotted...
I was kind of surprised this deer let me take even one photo, never mind the handful of others I was able to snap during that time. I'm so used to deer running away from me almost before I can even get a glimpse of them, but this deer just stood there and watched me.
Sniffing the air to determine whether I was a threat to her. Watching me closely all the while.
Then started creeping forward again and I got this picture of her nibbling on some tree leaves or berries or whatever she found.
Yum, yum.
Then I noticed another movement to the right of this scene. A second deer! And look at those adorable, precious eyes too. Almost sad-looking.
Creeping toward the first deer. Look how brilliantly they hide in the trees and brush. By the way, clicking on any of these pictures will lead you to a page where you can choose to view the larger version of each photo. They are all sized 1024x768 just because. =p I didn't want to sacrifice the detail entirely.
The two of them hiding, one is watching me.
And oh my! A third one has appeared!
Now there's four of them! They begin to disappear into the trees, still calmly creeping.
Goodbye, friends of Herne. It was nice meeting you.
