Oh, my mom has the same problem. Granted, we don't pay for ear flushing, but our doctor's far and the wait time's a killer so she's usually just lazy...
They do sell over the counter drops for this (i dunno what it would be called in ze States). They're not very expensive and you can buy those small pump thingies (plastic, ask pharmacist) for like less than 5 bucks. However, decent-to-big-sized syringe will work just as well. What she does is use the drops for a few days (about 2-3 times a day, especially before u sleep: drop them in ur ear and then use cotton to keep in there). This loosens the earwax and then u can just flush.
My mom's used plain olive oil in the past too, I believe.
