Be aware, be prepared

Seeing that April 1 is tomorrow, and I haven't seen a whole lot of mention of this on my FL, I thought I'd just give a little heads-up to all of those out in FL list land that may not be as vigilant about their computers as some people on my email lists.

There's a pernicious worm set to go tomorrow called Conficker.C, and it may have already infected upwards of 5-15 million computers worldwide. Like many worms and computer virii, it carries the warning that it may very well delete =all= the files on your computer, take control of said machine and change things that you consider irreplaceable. If you don't make weekly backups (I'd guesstimate that upwards of 90% of us don't) and don't have your computer set to update itself through Windows (if you have a Microsith OS) you might be vulnerable. There's been little suggestion that there's one clear symptom to be on the lookout for, as the author of the worm is at present unknown and if they're smart, they'll stay that way.

Two things you can do right away to check to see if you're vulnerable or have already been infected:

If you have a Microsoft Operating System (Win98, Win2K, WinME, WinXP (Home or Pro editions), WinVista etc) go to Start-Windows Update and let the updater check your computer for updates, if you haven't done this for awhile its going to take some time for the thing to do its job so be patient, it will be worthwhile in the long run.

Go to this website and download the offered program, it will do an intensive sweep of your system looking for the offending program. Its very important that you not have any other programs running while you're doing the sweep (go get a cup of coffee or something while its scanning) depending on how large your hard drive(s) is/are it might take awhile. Be patient, its worth the time spent.

The other option is a little more intensive, especially if you're sort of hooked on using your computer daily. Don't use your computer for the entirety of tomorrow, go back to using it April 2.

There are many sites that suggest its not going to be a problem, a good friend of mine who repairs computers now that he's retired from being a LAN Admin for the county tells me that he thinks its going to be a big deal, so in the interest of fairness I pay attention to what he has to say. Better safe than sorry at any rate!
