there is music that makes me miss home. not songs that remind me of things so much, but a sound that makes cold winter days and lonely prarie people come to life no matter where in the world you are. we talk a lot about how canada is not all suffering and endurance. how we are tired of film and literature that portrays canadians as rural folk, driven by landscape and the canadian shield. that as a nation we are more than that. we are urban. bad-ass. contemporary. but when i think about what canada sounds like it sounds like great lake swimmers and justin rutledge and neko case (even though she's american).
