So we have a lens problem - luckily it doesn't yet seem to be a total lens addiction :-)
Anyway, we're after a kit lens replacement. We have been looking at:
The new Canon kit lens -
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - cheap, now has IS (but not USM) but possibly a but too much of a replacing like with like.
The shiny Canon -
Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - not cheap but not as bad as it was when it came out. Generally seems to get good reviews but we're finding it a bit hard to decide if it is worth the money or not. Does not actually cost as much as Canon claim in case you were worrying :-)
So questions -
What do people think about the above lenses?
Are there third party equivalents (especially for the second lens) they would recommend (e.g. Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS HSM)?
Would we be better off doing something like getting the new kit for generic use and something like a third party equivalent to this
nice expensive Canon lens so we have a slightly better general lens but darker more portraity work covered a bit more specifically.
