[Discussion][Doctor Who] A Good Man Goes to War

Aug 26, 2011 22:47

So I re-watched A Good Man Goes to War tonight, to refresh my memory before the new episode comes out tomorrow.

While watching, I couldn't help but think that the role of Vastra (the reptile alien) would have suited Jack Harkness much better.

First of all, unless the Doctor pulled Vastra from the future and brought her back to 1888, her temporal location makes absolutely no sense. Jack was in that time period, although I'd hope the Doctor would pull him from another one so as not to cross timestreams.

Secondly, it makes sense for Jack to know background on the Time Lords, he actually spent a fair amount of time with 9 and 10. Moreso if the Master allowed them to interact in the Year That Never Was. Plus, he would have all of Torchwood's research at his disposal. A throwaway line about the Doctor telling Vastra about his people didn't convince me.

Thirdly, Vastra seems to share Jack's flirty nature.

Finally, why wouldn't the Doctor call in a favour from Jack? (Unless this regeneration is specifically trying to ignore the connections he made previously, which doesn't match the fact he nabbed Strax, the Sontaran.)

Vastra would have been a cool character to have there too, but I really felt like she was just substituting for the Captain as it stood.

I thought it was all in my head, until I read this:

Steven Moffat said he planned writing in a cameo for John Barrowman to reprise his role as Jack Harkness, but Barrowman was busy filming Torchwood: Miracle Day and was unavailable.

I think in my head, from now on I'm going to be substituting Jack in that scene. XD
