The problem is that I don't want to cause any fuss, but I don't want to hurt other people either. In times when I am not quite so depressed (and today was one until a few hours ago) is that once I start acting or thinking about myself as if I am not completely worthless, there is almost always an immediate conflict somewhere. Just ignoring people sometimes seems too much like saying - "sorry, you have every right to treat me like an stupid doormat." Mostly I do just apologize profusely and make excuses for the other person, as I did initially this time, but then I realised that they were effectively having a go at a load of other people - everyone who has ever shared any good news, or anything heart-warming with anyone else on a day when a death was reported in the news in fact, or anyone who has rejoiced in another's happiness. That includes quite a lot of people I really like and respect (yourself included.) At that point, ignoring someone smacks of disloyalty.
Anyway, I'll give it some thought overnight. Thank you again for your kindness.
