On Friday afternoon, Mike walks out of the locker room to find Kurt sitting on the hood of his car.

The sight is almost enough to make Mike turn around and walk back into the school and hide in the choir room until Monday morning, because today he is not in the mood to deal with this. He’s physically exhausted from baseball practice going late and he’s mentally exhausted from this past week. He can’t look at Kurt (or Brittany, though none of this is her fault) without feeling pissed and Kurt is wearing that goddamn Cheerios uniform again, which just makes him even angrier and kind of turned on. At least he stopped with the fucking flannel.

But when Kurt uncrosses his legs and hops off the hood, Mike knows he’s been seen. Since it’s too late to turn around, he decides to just keep walking as if the other boy isn’t even there. It’s fair, he thinks, because that’s basically how Kurt’s been treating him all week.

“Mike…” Kurt starts quietly, tugging nervously on the strap of his bag.

“Nice hickey,” Mike says loudly, popping the trunk of his car so he can throw his practice stuff in. “Did Brittany give that to you?”

Kurt slaps a hand to his neck to cover the fading, barely there bruise, as his face flushes a bright red.

“I think you know how that got there.”

He does. Without even closing his eyes he can perfectly recall the way the skin tasted on his tongue.

“What do you want, Kurt?”

Kurt fidgets awkwardly. “I just wanted to apologize -”

“I think you did enough of that the other day,” Mike can hear the anger creeping into his voice. “You know, right before you ran out of my room without any explanation?”

“I-I didn’t mean to -”

Mike slams the trunk of his car shut, and Kurt jumps a little. “Actually, I’m pretty sure you did mean to. I realize that I’m just a bit character in the grand production that is your life, but next time do you think you could warn me that it’s not going to mean anything to you when we fuck? That way I won’t get any of my stupid emotions involved and you can go back to your life completely undisturbed.”

“Mike…”

“Just leave me alone.”

He moves towards the driver’s side door, but before he can pull the handle open, Kurt is reaching out and grasping his wrist.

“No. Hear me out, please?”  Kurt’s voice is halfway between angry and hurt and Mike refuses to look at him, because he knows that he’d be able to see that desperate look in his eyes if he did. That plus the feel of his hand on his wrist is what got them into this mess in the first place.

But he doesn’t move, doesn’t try to escape, so Kurt starts talking.

“Look, I’m sorry, alright? I completely fucked up and I’ve been a total bitch to you. You have every right to be mad, but I am sorry. I just…I need you to know that I didn’t end up at your house by accident. I don’t consider you a bit character, or a last resort, or a stand-in, or anything. I went to your house because I wanted to see you. And what happened between us? Nothing in my life has ever felt so right. I can’t stop thinking about it and I can’t stop thinking about you and the way you make me feel.”

Kurt takes a deep breath and seems to realize that he’s still holding onto Mike’s wrist, so he hastily lets go and takes a step back. Mike still refuses to look at him.

“But I know I fucked up whatever chance I might’ve had with you. So,” Kurt says quietly, “I guess I’ll just go then.”

Mike can see him walking away in the reflection in the car window. He’s kind of shocked at that confession. He never expected anything like that, not in a million years, but he’s thinking to himself, isn’t this what you’ve been waiting for? Hoping for?

It is. And he knows he can’t let Kurt walk away. Between the two of them, they’ve made some pretty spectacular mistakes recently, but letting him go without a fight would be the biggest mistake of them all.

“Kurt!” The other boy whips around so fast that Mike’s a little concerned about whiplash. “How mad do you think Coach Sylvester would be if I took you out for a burger?”

The smile that breaks out across Kurt’s face is breathtaking. It’s the best thing Mike’s seen all week.

“I would say extremely mad.”

“Then I say it’s a great idea. What do you think?”

Kurt’s not forgiven, not yet, and they have a ton of talking to do, but with the way Kurt is looking at him right now, hope shining in his eyes, Mike thinks that this just might be a good place to start.

"Yeah, I think it's a great idea, too."
