Someone's been tampering with the records. The whole College of Heralds could have sworn that 'Quarterly, argent and sable' was a long-held device, but no one can find it on the rolls... Sounds almost like a submission for "10 Bad Larps". ;) Just for the shear knowledge of heraldic terns needed. Definitely something that could be run as an event during a camping weekend.

I don't know, heraldic terns seem to look pretty much like terns. Much more recognizable than some beasts.

Well, South Africa has a heraldic history, and they should have terns, but I don't know that the latter shows up much in the former. Maybe a few times. A springbuck would be much more likely.

Why is it that this, of all the replies, made me smile and laugh?

Looking for a relevant song, I found the acceptance letter for:
----
Baldwin of Erebor. Badge. A dove displayed upon a billet chequy Or and gules between a pair of cockatrices clad in motley like a fool's, their feathers are dimidiated with a tree eradicated, limbed and fructed countercompony.

Note: Fields and tinctures of charges need not all be specified in a badge. This is a special exception to the rule against complexity and does not constitute a precedent. Please see the drawing and story appended at the end of this letter.
---

And then, of course, there's my song, "Sable a pile or, rondelly gules, a chief invected argent." :-)
