Trying new foods

Hi friends,

I had so much fun at the grocery store!  My wallet took a real hit of course, but I gotta do something to spice up my diet.

Have I mentioned that I'm going on a diet (or rather, I should say changing my lifestyle, but who are we kidding?  Oreos were created for me!).  Dieting and exercising are some of the side affects of booking a cruise, and compared to some weight loss programs, that could be considered cheap.  We want to go snorkeling and hiking on Mayan ruins, and it's so much more pleasant to do all of that if I am in shape.  So we got our butts out of bed at 5 AM four times this week, and today I joined Weight Watchers.

To tell the truth, I get bored of being good.  Recipes are a lot more fun when you can be bad.  But I did get some new cookbooks for lighter style eating, and of course WW has lots of recipes on their website.  Thus, I decided to put a little fun into being good by trying new things.

My Adventures In Food:
1. Today, I ate a persimmon for the first time!  It was pretty good.  The inside texture is like an especially ripe mango and the skin is a little thick too.  it didn't have a strong flavor, just sweet.  Actually, I was thinking pumpkins, cause it looks like a pumpkin, and I decided that it tasted a little pumpkinish.  So tell me, any opinions, recipes, advice about persimmons?

2. I'm looking for a midmorning or afternoon snack, so I decided to try a Clif Bar.  The one that I had, peanut toffee, was pretty good, but it was too big and seemed to have a lot of fat.  I do really like the chewy cookie texture though.  I think that if I halve a bar that then they will be just right.

3. Look at this recipe!!!  I'm totally making this tonight before I go to bed!  I LOVE the idea of a slow cooker breakfast that you throw together before bed and it's ready when you wake up!  And I love pumpkin flavored food too!  Though one reviewer did say they were trying it will all different kinds of fruits and veggies.

4. And of course I will be making soup, lots and lots of soup!!!  I love autumn cooking.  On today's menu is Sweet Potato, Ham and Leek soup from my Cooking Light cookbook.  I'll be happy to share the recipe with anyone interested, but I don't feel I ought to post it online.

Any suggestions for future foods or recipes?  My next fruit is gonna be Dragon Fruit, which I saw for the first time in NY's China Town, but which I saw today at my supermarket!  So exciting!

Anyone doing Nanowrite?  Wanna be my friend?  Just let me know and I'll send you my contact info!
