trip north

So, driving north, I'm just leaving a town in northern WI (Rhinelander? Eagle River?) and I'm accelerating up to 55... and two deer run out of a hedge on the right side of the road, right in front of me. I hit the brake hard and swerved (slightly) into the oncoming lane (no traffic, thank heavens). I don't know how long it took to stop, but it simultaneously seemed A) really fast, and B) not as fast as I wanted. The lead deer kept coming, trying to get across the road. The tailing deer stopped on a dime, and avoided running into my car, I'm guessing by a under a foot. The lead deer finally tried to get away from me, and angled in the same direction as I was heading. When I came to a full and complete stop, I believe its flank was probably an inch from my driver-side headlight. I am still thanking God I didn't hit either deer, even though I threaded the road between them. They were the only 2 living deer I saw the entire trip.

I got to see my dad, sister, and niece, and all the visiting was good, even if people did try to feed me at every turn. Good food, but too much of it. I visited with Marge and Bill, and checked out their new dance instruction venture, dancezonemqt.com. Its located in what used to be B&J's (which will mean nothing to most of you, except that it was less than 3 blocks from where I grew up), and has an awesome hardwood floor, sound system, lighting... its really amazing what they've done with the place. I couldn't find my camera, so I have no pictures, but otherwise, it was a wonderful and productive visit. Excepting, of course, the deceased loved ones I still wish I could visit.

The trip back was uneventful, unless you count making it all the way back on 1 tank of gas (12.8 gal, approx 31 mpg) in my 8-year-old car to be noteworthy. Work is still ok, happily. We're having our first spring thunderstorm of the year, except that the temperature is supposed to fall today, and they're saying it will turn into 6 to 12 inches of very wet snow later today. Happily, I don't have to drive again until tonight. Now... back to bed. Good morning.
