Fugitive teenager wanted by officials

A Katy-area teenager who was granted probation in the murder of an elementary school teacher is now a fugitive after slipping away from supervision.

Crime Stoppers released a wanted flier Thursday for Breanna Zipf, 19, a little more than a year into the term of her probation. An arrest warrant was issued in November.

Zipf was convicted of murder for running over the teacher with a car and sentenced to 10 years' probation in October 2005. She could have been sentenced up to life in prison, but jurors chose probation likely because of Zipf's tearful testimony, Harris County prosecutor Jennifer Cook said.

The jury could have chosen lesser charges of manslaughter or negligent homicide.

"I think she needed to be put in prison," Cook said. "I probably did make the comment, 'She won't last long.' "

Zipf completed a court-ordered drug-treatment program in September and had been transferred to a halfway house, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman said. In November, the teen was taken to a Dallas hospital after she complained of feeling ill and was somehow able to slip away, said officials with state District Judge Brock Thomas' court.

On July, 23, 2004, Gwendolen Davey, 38, was walking her dog in a Katy-area subdivision when she was hit by a car driven by Zipf. The teen had taken her mother's rental car without permission and was returning home when she blacked out just before the crash.

Zipf's parents could not be reached for comment.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for information leading to her capture. Anyone with information is asked to call 713-222-TIPS.
