So there I was
driving and speeding as usual
not the fun speeding just driving real fast
allready late
always late
a car in front of me swerves
crossing lanes it was never meant to cross
hurrling infront of me
smashing into the guard rail
I slam on the breaks
it rolls away from me
I try to speed up and pass this rolling fury of an SUV
rolling back twords me I go faster
hearing it crunch the wall behind me
I see it come to a stop in my rear view mirror
everything is still
My car is stopped
the hazard lights are blinking
My phone is in my hands
but I don't remember how to dial 911
my hands move like aliens with their own power
I'm speaking now to someone
there's a woman in the SUV
she isn't moving
suddenly there is a crowd of people around
they open the door
I smell gasoline
The emergency operator tells me he's connecting me to the EMT
The sign ahead says routh 71, I tell him
I turn around, Oltorf stands there, white letters against a green background
The woman is half way in and out of the car
she's barefoot
I wonder how that happened
or perhaps she just drives that way
Her eye is moving, looking at each of us
her hand lies next to her, the porciline acrilic nails are perfection against the flood of red around her hand
I try to clear my head, triing to remember what the red stuff is
some voice inside of me says that red stuff is blood, it's supposed to be inside not out
she's liing on her back, and I'm by her head, but her left foot is facing the wrong way
otherwise perfect I can see the bottom of her foot
She isn't criing, not even in pain
maybe she's in shock
A paramedic is there, asking me questions
I don't remember them showing up
I must not be on the phone anymore
He asks if I saw the accident, I think I'm supposed to nod now
He tells me to stay and tell the police what I saw
It's all becoming blurry now
When did I get so far from the woman, her eye catches mine
the other witnesses left when the EMTs came
She looks so scared
I think I'm supposed to comfort her, but I'm frozen
I know I should say something
It's like going to a party uninvited and not saying hello to the host
I watch as they put her on a back brace and take her away
A police officer asks me questions
I try to answer as best I can
things are still so blurry
I am told I can go
as I walk to my car I take a picture of just the car
This could have hit me
it almost did
There are skid marks all around my car
I can still smell the gas
