So Chicago is officially in the nasty post-snow warmup phase. Over a foot of snow came down on Friday and Saturday. With the warm up and the rain yesterday and today, Chicagoans are now going through some of least pleasurable experiences the city offers including:
-Stepping on to what you think is wet sidewalk, and discovering that you've actually plunged ankle-deep into Urban Filth Slushie (not a flavor coming to 7-Eleven any time soon, one hopes), which bears a striking resemblance to sidewalk in color and visual texture.
-Realizing there's no way to cross the street without wading in Urban Filth Slushie or a deep puddle of water. (In particular, kudos to the sidewalk in front of the Chicago Tribune parking lot on Grand, which featured black snow and UFS with patches of weird green and purple. Parts of it also had a rainbow sheen that you usually only see when gasoline floats on water. Yummy!)
-Getting doused with a spray of the filthy water, UFS, or black snow when a car (or, heaven help you, a bus) drives by.
All of these things seem to indicate a pretty severe drainage problem in Chicago. I know I'm no urban planner, but since my nearest major road recently collapsed in part because there was NOTHING UNDERNEATH IT, I must admit I'm befuddled that the water has nowhere to go.
