Buttons didn't make it.

Last Wednesday night I was walking BUttons, my little bichon frise puppy, when an Australian Heeler came running out of its apartment and not on a leash. The owners were trying to catch their dog so I was trying to help them catch it. I wasn't very smart though, because I didn't think to pick up Buttons. The dog was running around so fast that it scared Buttons and he started to run. The A.H. ran after him and attacked him in the abdomen and leg and chest. Buttons had gotten off of his leash at this time because he'd run so fast that I couldn't keep holding on. I tried to separate the 2 dogs but decided that it wouldn't be smart because I could get hurt and I didn't know what type of dog this was anyway. THe owner of the dog finally separated them. Buttons and I went to our apartment after talking to the owner of the dog to find out where they lived and if their dog had any rabies shots, since I was bitten by his dog and he was bitten by my dog. My neighbor was also trying to check the spot where Buttons was bleeding and Buttons bit her a little on the hand. She's fine and was not going to call animal control about it.

So anyway Buttons was bleeding a little bit so I thought he would be okay and just let him rest, and of course he was in shock. He got sick over night at about 3 in the morning and so by morning I put him into his cage to make sure that he wasn't making messes all over the apartment. I came home and the side of his abdomen was jutted out and every time he would breathe it would kind of pop out like he had a puncture wound. Poor baby!

I took him to emergency care right away and he was put on an iv after I had seen x-rays showing that he had ahernia and his intestines were still inside the skin but outside the body wall. That's why I could see the protruding area on his abdomen. So anyway he had some pain medications and we had decided that he would need surgery the next day. I left and checked on him later on that night. He was doing okay and resting. I went to bed figuring I wouldn't be able to make it to school the next day anyway because of his surgery and all. At 3:30 in the morning I got a call saying that he was having a cardiac arrest and there was really nothing more they could do to help him. They called me minutes later on my cell phone and told me that he was almost gone and wasn't breathing but still had a heart beat. They wanted to know if I wanted them to euthanize him. I gave them permission, but asked if it was possible for him to just go the natural way and while I was talking to them on the phone he passed away on his own.

Poor baby. So anyway...I talked to my neighbor and he will pay all the bills in full. I also went to the doctor to get my hand checked and am not charging him for that since he got bitten as well. I called animal control and his dog is now in quarantine. The apartment is giving him 5 days to either get rid of the dog or move out of the apartment. It has been crazy.

GOOD NEWS though:)
Because I bought Buttons at a pet store at the mall, a popular thing to do in AZ, I had bought a warantee on him for a year. I didn't remember doing that, but I can get a replacement for him since I had not been the one at fault for this accident. It's been rough, but hopefully everything will work out. I'll be in Decorah today and until Saturday...let me know if you get bored and I'd be more than happy to see you guys. Please keep me in your prayers and pray that the owner would complete his end of the deal by paying me everything by next Sunday. Thanks much and Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. Any suggestions of small dogs? I'm trying to find one that isn't too yippy, doesn't shed, but is cute and likes to sit on my lap and play. :)
