I've been thinking of leaving xanga... Today I found this comment from a student I had three years ago:
Dear Ms. Ong,
Thanks for coming to my graduation, you were my biggest surprise. I remember your xanga because when I overheard you tell it to Venus I thought "No Nomenclature" to be a very interesting ideology - it made me think of a society where nobody generalizes or prejudges each other. Things that are thought-provoking tend to stick in my memory. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you because you've been a real support to me as a teacher through your godliness and kindness - even if for only one year, and I didn't get to say this quite so well at graduation since I'm not good with vocalizing my thoughts. You were a tough teacher to me because your lessons forced me to think critically about music in ways I never bothered before. Nevertheless, I decided not to transfer to Art I for the easier VPA credit because I believed I would get more out of Music I. And I did - that piano recital was the first time I ever played in front of a group of people, and those lessons about different types of music from Gregorian Chant to Baroque gave me a completely different view of music. I actually had an appreciation for music itself. Even though I'm going into the bioengineering major, I have always dreamed of being able to make my own music. Your class was introductory in that step. I will certainly remember you as a part of my CCS experience when I make it big. Thanks for teaching. Consider this my yearbook signing as an excuse for the informalness.
Sincerely,
