Last night, the show
Pushing Daisies aired on CTV (it doesn't air in the States until tonight apparently). When I first heard the premise, I was kind of interested, but not a whole lot. But since CTV has made the brilliant decision to air it between Gossip Girl (yes, sadly I have become addicted... it's a terrible, terrible show, but enjoyable all the same) and Bones on Fox, I figured I might as well watch it.
The premise is simple: as a young boy, Nate finds out he has the power to bring things back to life. He sees his dog get hit by a car (this is literally 30 seconds into the pilot), then brings it back to life by touching it. His mother has a sudden brain aneurysm and dies, so Nate revives her, only to find that if that person stays alive for more than 60 seconds, someone else in the near vicinity will die instead, in a sort of strange balance to the universe. Nate also discovers that while the first touch brings them back to life, a second touch will kill them. Fast forward, Nate is grown up and is a successful pie maker (his trick is using dead fruit, because he can make it ripe again). As a side business, he helps a cop, who knows about this "gift", solve murders, as he can bring the victim back to life and ask who killed them before he makes them dead again within 60 seconds. Enter Chuck: the girl who lived next door to him when he was young, and the girl he's had a crush on for as long as he could remember. Chuck's been murdered on a cruise, and Nate reenters her life by bringing her back to find out who killed her, only to break his own rules and keep her alive. Needless to say, because of the fact that he can't touch her without killing her, there is a LOT of tension in this first episode. It's a hilarious show, and definately worth watching. It may sound weird, and it's in the same sort of vein as Dead Like Me, only without the excessive swearing. Both Nate (Lee Pace) and Chuck (Anna Friel) are adorable and I can see this show winning Emmys.
And again, I have updated my movie reviews.
