I have just received word that
Martin Dillon, one of the founding members of the Merleau-Ponty circle and author of the definitive examination of Meleau-Ponty's philosophy, has just passed away while on a trip to Europe. For me, this news is more tragic than the passing of Derrida. I had just met Dillon this past fall; he was an amicable fellow, taking the time to talk to me even though he had no idea who I was, what I do, where I go to school, etc. He was a chain smoker, had a most mellifluous voice, and the kindness of his disposition was offset by a playful contentiousness in regard to philosophy. You will be missed, professor.
