A word on furnished apartments

Yes, I know. It's been months since I said anything here. This could be because I had nothing useful to say, or it could be because I was just too lazy to bother adding yet one more website to my list of things I check every day. I'm leaning more towards the former. Anyhow, for those of you who don't already know (ie: most of you here) - I'm working for the next three weeks out in the wilderness - also called Red Rock, Ontario. For those of you who don't know where Red Rock is, it's just outside of Nippigon. For those of you who don't know where Nippigon is - think the northernmost tip of Lake Superior. Think a lot of rocks, trees, and water - and very little else (including people, and bars). In short - it's absolutely beautiful, pristine wilderness - wonderful if you're in to that sort of thing. But that's neither here, nor there. My boss rented me an apartment for the time I'm here - it's both cheaper and a LOT better than the local hotel. The apartment came furnished with beds, nice sofa and chair (which I'm currently sitting in), Television, dishes, etc.

Only after I'd done my shopping (in a town 15 minutes down the road), and my boss had left to return to Montreal (with the car) - did I realize that there are certain things that you need to have available in any furnished apartment, and you should check for before you sign the lease.

1) Can opener. Whether you can cook or not, canned soups and the like are a staple of the bachelor/ette life. Being able to open these canned soups is, of course, necessary for eating them. Fortunately, I can cook, and bought enough food to last a while, as I certianly have no can opener.

2) Milk jug. I know, not everyone drinks milk. I don't really drink milk, but I certainly like it in my cereal. So, I'm certainly able to drink 4 litres of milk in 2 weeks. But only if there's a jug to be able to put the milk bag IN. Fortunately, the 1 gallon jugs of water are readily available, and can be emptied and replaced with milk.

3) Toilet paper. Fortunately, this hasn't proved a problem AS YET - as there are a couple of rolls here. I'm hoping that this will suffice for the time that I'm here if for no other reason than that I really don't want to have to buy 8 rolls of TP for one week.

4) Dish rags. Dish soap, check. Dishes, check. Something to use to combine the two of them when necessary - nope. Fortunately, I brought a LOT of socks, I'm sure one of them can be used for this purpose.

If there's anything else I thought of, I'll let you know.
